Firefighters to take part in 'emergency scenarios' at Hough Top School

Firefighters will be taking part in a series of exercises over coming weeks at the former Hough Top School site in Swinnow, Leeds the fire service told the YEP.

The exercises will involve firefighters who work in Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield districts and will help crews train for various different types of emergency scenarios.

The fire service said exercises will be carried out in a Covid safe way and have been made possible thanks to Leeds Council, who made the former school building available to the Fire Service to train in.

Watch Commander Sam Wood, from Leeds District at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We are really pleased to be able to carry out this training which will involve firefighters from three districts.

"The training will be carried out in a covid safe way and will involve various scenarios which firefighters could face.

"Using buildings like this to train in is very beneficial to us and allows us to practice our skillsets and training.

“Some of the firefighters taking part in the training even went to this school as youngsters some years ago so it will be nostalgic for them to be back on-site again.

“The public may see up to six fire engines on-site and there could also be some synthetic smoke coming from the building, but please do not be alarmed.

"The training will happen on weekdays and weekends and all local residents have been made aware through leaflet drops in the area.”
