Despite having to cope with midfielder Dave Syers acting as goalkeeper for 45 minutes, Farsley Celtic easily saw off AFC Telford United, 3-1 at Throstle Nest.
Lee Ellington and Gareth Grant (2) did the damage in an action-packed game which saw Celts keeper Piotr Skiba depart through injury – 20 minutes after scoring a bizarre own goal.

Syers also wrote himself into Celts folklore by saving an 85th-minute penalty from former Farsley forward Damian Reeves.

Boss Neil Parsley was delighted with the result against one of Blue Square North's tougher opponents.

He said: "For the passion and the circumstances thrown up in the game, it was certainly one of the most pleasing games of the season.

"Piotr gave them a goal which gave them a bit of a lift which they didn't deserve and that is one of the knife-edges which you are on in football.

"But I was pleased in the second half, in the circumstances of Dave Syers going in goal and the way we played.

"We protected him as much as we could and he dealt with everyone, but going forward, we proved we are entertaining."

Ellington put Farsley ahead after only nine minutes as Ryan Serrant made a great block and the ball cannoned to Ellington who finished coolly.

Telford were then gifted an equaliser in a moment which is likely to be scrutinised on Youtube for weeks to come.

Skiba had made a save from Reeves and when he attempted to throw the ball out wide, the Polish keeper managed to hurl the ball into the back of his own net.

His afternoon got even worse as he was then forced off injured after collision with Reeves on the stroke of half-time.

Luckily Farsley had a man of experience waiting to take his place.
Syers had played a whole game in goal for Ossett Albion last season in a 2-0 victory over Harrogate Railway.

Farsley went on to dominate despite their slight handicap and sealed the three points with two goals either side of the hour.

A long ball down the field found Grant who took a touch before launching a thunderous volley into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Grant doubled his tally moments later, tapping home from Telford keeper Ryan Young's mistake.

Farsley were well in control, but Telford were handed the chance to set up a nervy last few minutes from the penalty spot.

Reeves stepped up but Syers was equal to him, diving to his right and palming the ball to safety. Farsley are now 13th in the table and have won three games on the bounce – two in the league, one in the FA Trophy.

The chance to extend the run comes tomorrow in the West Riding County Cup clash against FC Halifax Town at Throstle Nest.
