As the weather threatens to wreak havoc with another West Riding County Cup campaign, Farsley Celtic boss Neil Parsley is calling for changes he believes can put the shine back on the famous trophy.
Parsley, who saw Farsley's tie with Wakefield postponed five times last season, says it's highly unlikely tonight's second-round clash with FC Halifax Town will survive the deluge which caused Leeds Carnegie Ladies' match at Throstle Nest to be abandoned at half-time on Sunday.
Postponements are a regular problem for the competition, which Parsley believes would benefit immensely from a switch to a summer format.
Parsley said: "We had problems with postponements last season and it's not looking good for Tuesday night
"If the game is on, I don't know how many we will get here. The club has done all it can in reducing admission prices but we all know in times of recession fans don't seem to pay interest in competitions like the county cup, especially in the pouring rain.
"I think they should run it as a pre-season competition as they have done in the past. Clubs would be unveiling new kits, there are new players on show and it would put a competitve edge on pre-season games.
"The weather is good as well, which is better for spectators, and it would save the county a problem. It must be a real headache for counties rearranging all these games.
"It's a nice trophy to win but year after year it is hampered by the weather, and then this cup takes precedent over league games and there is a knock-on effect.
"I've won it before and it's a real prestigious cup – there are some big names on that trophy – but at the moment the weather means it's a real problem.
"I was at Leeds United when we played county cup games pre-season and if they switched it back to summer you might get the likes of Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield back in it.
"Don't get me wrong, they would only play reserve/youth sides, but I'm all for trying new ideas and I think a pre-season tournament for all Yorkshire clubs would attract crowds and add more spice to the competition."
Farsley will name an unchanged squad should their game against UniBond League First Division outfit Halifax get the go-ahead, and they will be in bouyant mood after a 3-1 win over AFC Telford elevated them to 13th spot in Blue Square North on Saturday.
It's a remarkable achievement for a side who started the season on -10 points after entering administration.
Elsewhere in the county cup tonight, Farsley's divisional rivals Harrogate Town travel to UniBond League side Wakefield and Ossett Town entertain Guiseley in an all-UniBond League top-flight clash.
Garforth Town travel to Northern Counties East League side Askern, while Ossett Albion play host to NCE league outfit Liversedge.
Top-flight Selby host first division Yorkshire Amateur in an all-NCE League affair, and Brighouse Town are at home to North West Counties League side Barnoldswick Town.
Frickley are in UniBond League Challenge Cup action, hosting North Ferriby United in the third round.
