Farsley Celtic boss John Deacey says the club have signalled their intentions for next season with the signing of Tom Penford from Bradford City.
Deacey is determined to see the Celts bounce back to the Conference at the first time of asking after their relegation to Blue Square North was confirmed last weekend.

Farsley reacted positively to the news by snapping up 23-year-old midfielder Penford, who made 16 appearances for the Bantams first team last season, and more new signings are set to follow.

Deacey, who expects to retain the bulk of his squad, said: "It's a really good signing. I am pleased to get Tom on board and this certainly shows our intentions for next season.

"We are determined to make a big challenge next season and everyone is working their socks off to ensure we go into it in good shape.

"Tom played quite a few games for Bradford's first team last season. there was a lot of competition from other teams around this area, but he spoke to us and I think the fact that Craig Bentham was on loan here from Bradford last season has played a big part in his decision.

"He will do a really good job and we are quite close to making a few more signings as well."

At least one of those is likely to be a striker following the departure of Damien Reeves to Conference side Histon.

Reeves' 23 goals in 2006-07 played a big part in Farsley's promotion from Conference North via the play-offs 13 months ago.

Deacey said: "It's a big loss to us but I still think we have some good forwards here who can fill his shoes and I am looking at other strikers at this moment in time.

"I want to thank Damien for his services to Farsley Celtic. I've had a good relationship with him, he rang me first to tell me he was going and I have a lot of time for him.

"We shook hands and if things don't work out at Histon then he knows where I am."

One person who will be returning to Farsley this summer is former boss Lee Sinnott, who led the club to three promotions in four glorious seasons.

Sinnott left to take over Football League outfit Port Vale last November and will return with the Valiants for a pre-season game on Tuesday, July 8.

"Lee wanted to bring a team up from Port Vale to say thank you to Farsley, which was really nice of him," said Deacey.

Celtic will also host Lincoln City in pre-season, with the Imps visiting Throstle Nest on Saturday, July 26.
