Today, staff at his old school said they were "shocked and saddened".

Farnley Park Maths and Computing College acting head Philip McEvoy told Wortley Today: "Ricky was a popular student and successful sportsman who will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Support and counselling is available at the school to anybody who needs it."

"While there is no suggestion at this stage that (Ricky] playing the game he loved had any part to play in this terrible tragedy, both the RFL and the RFL Benevolent Fund will offer their full support to his family in the weeks and months ahead."
